downloadable e-books and audiobooks

Picture
Users of the Carver Memorial Library have free access to an online collection of e-books and audiobooks, through the Maine InfoNet Download Library.  You just need:

1. A compatible computer, or other compatible device such as a Kindle, Nook or iPad for e-books; or an iPod or generic MP3 player for audio books.

2. A reliable internet connection. (Use the library's if you lack one at home.)

3. Your five-digit library patron number (available on request)

Setting Up

How you use the Download Library depends on your reading / listening device. For details on how to start, point your web browser to

http://download.maineinfonet.org

and click on the Quick Start Guide link on the left side of the screen. It describes how to set up your computer to handle these materials. The instructions in the Guide are the key to everything.

Tips

The Checkout Assistance link on the main page describes the use of the Download Library in detail.  Here are some additional tips:

  • Like physical books, e-books and audio books are unavailable when someone else has checked them out.  Items that are immediately available have the “add to cart” link beside them.  Items that are in use display the option to “place a hold”.  An email will notify you when the item becomes available.
  • Publishers and device makers have come up with a bewildering variety of formats.  Unfortunately, not all formats work on all devices.  The help links on the Download Library page give a far better explanation of this than we have room for here. We expect and hope that format barriers will diminish over time.
  • If you have questions or difficulties using the Download Library, contact library staff. If desired, we are happy to provide a brief in-library tutorial on how to get your device to work with the service.
